Long Beach is set to take world stage in the 2028 Olympic Games, with officials confirming the City will host 11 sporting events—more than doubling the number initially assigned in Los Angeles’ original bid.

April’s announcement followed approval from the International Olympic Committee’s Executive Board, greenlighting LA28’s updated Olympic Venue Plan and solidifying Long Beach’s position as the most active venue city outside of Los Angeles.

The updated lineup marks an exciting chapter in Long Beach’s Olympic history, which includes hosting events during the 1932 and 1984 Games.

Newly added to Long Beach’s 2028 schedule are Beach Volleyball, Coastal Rowing, Sport Climbing and Target Shooting. Those events join a previously announced roster that includes Handball, Canoe Sprint, Rowing, Sailing, Marathon Swimming, Artistic Swimming and Water Polo.

The events will be staged across seven different locations, creating a vibrant Olympic experience across the City’s iconic coastline.

Beach Volleyball is set to be held at Alamitos Beach, offering a picturesque setting against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean. Coastal Rowing, a new Olympic discipline, also will be hosted along the Long Beach waterfront, adding to the City’s reputation for world-class water sports. Sport Climbing and Target Shooting will transform the Long Beach Convention Center’s outdoor lot and an adjacent temporary indoor venue into Olympic stages, placing spectators within walking distance of multiple events.

The expanded slate of competitions enhance the City’s Olympic presence but also offer considerable economic and cultural benefits. With thousands of athletes, officials and fans expected to arrive in 2028, local businesses, hotels and cultural institutions stand to see a significant boost in activity and exposure.

In preparation for this monumental role, Long Beach has developed a Strategic Roadmap to guide its planning and operations for the Olympic Games. This comprehensive blueprint focuses on equity and inclusion, public safety and long-term community legacy.

Central to its role, the City’s initiatives are aimed at supporting small businesses, promoting local arts and culture and expanding youth sports opportunities. Long Beach has also established Community Advisory Groups to engage residents and local leaders in shaping the legacy impacts of the Games.

To keep the public informed and involved, a dedicated webpage is available at longbeach.gov/2028Games, featuring interactive maps, event details and opportunities for community participation.

The 2028 Olympic Games will be held from July 14 to July 30, followed by the Paralympic Games from August 15 to August 27.

As excitement builds, Long Beach is poised to deliver a memorable and meaningful Olympic experience that highlights the City’s unique spirit and international appeal.
