West Long Beach residents dusted off their bikes, roller skates, skateboards and walking shoes this spring for the return of Beach Streets—transforming neighborhood roadways into lively, car-free corridors for people to gather for the day.
Beach Streets West on May 10 was part of Beach Streets Open Streets, a series of community-centered events that promote sustainable transportation, local businesses and neighborhood pride. Organized by the City of Long Beach in partnership with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, this year’s festivities centered on Willow Street and Santa Fe Avenue, turning the heavily-trafficked thoroughfares into safe, open promenades.
More than just a neighborhood block party, Beach Streets West carried a deeper purpose by aligning with and uplifting the City’s Westside Promise Initiative. This 10-year investment strategy seeks to uplift West Long Beach through targeted efforts in housing, climate resiliency, youth development, workforce training and economic growth. The initiative’s presence was felt throughout the day, with informational booths and community showcases highlighting ongoing projects and opportunities.
The route was dotted with entertainment, including live music, kid-friendly zones, food trucks and pop-up shops. It was a festive atmosphere that encouraged participants to explore the community’s unique character.

Since its debut in 2015, Beach Streets has established itself as a hallmark of Long Beach’s commitment to health, safety and environmental responsibility. Each iteration of the event offers residents a car-free opportunity to reimagine their neighborhood streets, promoting zero-emission transportation options while spotlighting local businesses and cultural landmarks.
Past Beach Streets celebrations have crisscrossed communities from Uptown to Zaferia. As open streets events continue to gain momentum across the country, Long Beach remains at the forefront of the movement, demonstrating how community-focused, eco-friendly initiatives can invigorate neighborhoods and inspire lasting change.
